Homeschooling

I'm just starting new weekly links, mailing lists and updated information every week. I will probably take a break for the holidays.

We started homeschooling July, 2003. Our family is still getting into the swing of homeschooling. I have found so much information that it is at times overwhelming. Our family leans toward relaxed or unschooling. We were part of a private umbrella school in order to participate in  multi-age classes, and have some support and celebrations together. The school offers Friday classes as well as kept our homeschooling records. Jonathan loved his gym class. And Kiyanna had fun in "Fairy Tale Theater." Her class ranges in age from 3 to 11 years old. And the children loved helping each other and learning together. This fall we will be part of Home Options Program of Education (HOPE) sponsored by Aurora Public Schools. The children will attend classes on Friday and have fun.

One of our favorite authors, Neva Andrews, writes books about a young girl growing up during the Great Depression. The books are easy-to-read chapter books and really capture the attention of young readers. They have also been used in ESL classes at the high school level. Read about Jo Barkley and her adventures.

My oldest daughter went to public school from kindergarten through 5th grade. She only attended one school, and enjoyed growing up with her many friends.

While the school was very good and the teachers dedicated, my daughter has needed more than a classroom can offer. She is gifted and talented, and I saw her not being challenged to her abilities, nor helped in the few (non-academic) areas where she needed help. Unfortunately other circumstances (with two families and such) required that we find another solution. She is currently attending a charter school, and with some help reminding to do her homework, she is doing very well. She enjoys the teachers and challenges at school. She will be attending public high school this fall.
